Right Proper Art
Artistic expression is an important part of Right Proper - whether it’s through our beer or food, or from our family of artists we tapped to help create the warm and welcoming environment. We believe in self-expression and whimsy.

Patrick Owens
Patrick Owens is a DC artist, specializing in murals, chalk art, lettering and illustration. He is responsible for the large chalk art mural that has become a focal point of our Shaw Brewpub, featuring futuristic animals having a battle Royale in the city. At our Brookland Production House, Patrick’s murals line the entirety of the tasting room interior, telling the story of animals breaking out of a zoo, killing and destroying humans, and learning to do human things. While not the most appropriate for children, the Where’s Waldo-like-scene takes the time of a few beers to fully appreciate the gory details.
Kelly Towles
Kelly Towles, a leading Washington, D.C. artist, has literally painted the town since moving to the Nation’s Capital in the late 1990s. His electrically playful murals can be spotted on the exteriors and interiors of area buildings throughout the city. Towles works with community partners and local businesses to revitalize neighborhoods using his creative energy, focused on sharing his passion for street art while making an impact on the local community. His “Beer God” mural on the interior brick wall of the Shaw Brewpub depicts the mystery of fermentation. Before ancient civilizations discovered yeasts, they thought fermentation was a gift from the gods.
KATE DECICCIO & ROSE JAFFE
This mural was commissioned by Murals DC and DC Commission on Arts & Humanities. It’s located on the exterior of the Shaw Brewpub, in the alley next to the historic Howard Theatre. The mural pays homage to the unique history of the space, when it was called “Frank Holiday’s Pool Room” in the early 1900’s. Duke Ellington is pictured as a mentee - learning from the DC jazz heroes, Mahalia Jackson, Billy Taylor, Shirley Horn, Ron Holloway, Meshell Ndegeocello and Davey Yarborough. The mural combines painted wood cutouts on the painted brick wall.
